At the interview you need to make a good impression to impress the employer and show you are the best person for the job. To do this, we have put together a list of things you should and shouldn't do at a job interview.


Do:

  • Offer a firm handshake
  • Smile
  • Be polite, friendly and look the interviewer in the eye (but try not to stare)
  • Dress smartly and conservatively
  • Bring a pen and small notebook
  • Prepare yourself with knowledge about the Company, the industry and the position
  • Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer
  • Display self confidence
  • Tell the truth

Do not:

  • Be late
  • Criticise past employers, keep your answers positive
  • Swear – even mildly
  • Interrupt
  • Interview the interviewer
  • Argue or be overaggressive, take criticism gracefully
  • Show a lack of interest or enthusiasm
  • Be too personal or familiar
  • Attend the interview unless you are genuinely interested in the position
